Abstract

We numerically obtain the high energy short duration pulses using an Erbium-doped specialty fiber of ~1700 μm2 effective mode area and ~25 dB/m gain around 1530 nm wavelength. We investigate propagation of the Gaussian shaped nanosecond and picosecond pulses and observe the amplification of the pulses due to the high gain of the medium. We achieve the pulses of ~14 mJ energy, 127.6 ns duration, and ~112 kW peak power by the amplification of 10 µJ energy, 10 ns duration, and 1 kW peak power pulses in 1 m long large mode area gain fiber. Also, we obtain the pulses of ~2.8 mJ energy, 107.6 ps duration, and ~26 MW peak power by the amplification of 1 µJ energy, 10 ps duration, and 100 kW peak power pulses while propagating in 1 m length of the same fiber. These high energy pulses in eye-safe regions can be useful in eye-safe remote sensing, and 3D laser processing of silicon.
