Rapid population growth and urbanization have significantly increased global waste generation, creating severe environmental and energy challenges. Waste-to-energy (WTE) technologies offer a sustainable solution by converting waste into useful energy forms such as electricity, heat, and biofuels. However, conventional single-process WTE systems often suffer from limited efficiency and incomplete resource recovery. Hybrid WTE systems—integrating biochemical and thermochemical conversion processes—have emerged as a promising approach to improve energy yield, environmental sustainability, and economic feasibility. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of hybrid WTE systems, including combinations of anaerobic digestion, gasification, pyrolysis, and renewable energy technologies. The methodology includes a comparative assessment of hybrid configurations, energy recovery efficiency, and environmental performance based on published experimental and modeling studies. Results indicate that hybrid systems can increase energy recovery efficiency by up to 30–40% compared with stand-alone technologies. The integration of anaerobic digestion with thermochemical processes such as gasification and pyrolysis enables better utilization of organic waste fractions and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The study also highlights emerging trends such as AI-based optimization, bio-hydrogen production, and circular bioeconomy integration. Key research gaps include process optimization, large-scale implementation challenges, and feedstock variability management. Future research should focus on integrated system modeling, advanced catalysts, and digital monitoring technologies. Hybrid WTE systems represent a critical pathway for achieving sustainable waste management and renewable energy generation in the global transition toward a circular economy.
