Abstract

Nanotechnology is an emerging field of science that involves the design, development, and application of materials at the nanoscale, generally ranging from 1 to 100 nanometers. Its integration with medical science has led to the development of nanomedicine, which offers promising approaches for disease diagnosis, drug delivery, cancer treatment, medical imaging, tissue engineering, and vaccine development. Nanomaterials possess unique physical, chemical, and biological properties that can improve the performance of conventional medical technologies. Nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems can enhance drug solubility, protect therapeutic agents from degradation, and improve their distribution within the body. In cancer therapy, nanotechnology provides opportunities for targeted drug delivery, photothermal therapy, and improved diagnostic imaging. Despite these advantages, challenges such as toxicity, biocompatibility, manufacturing costs, regulatory requirements, and long-term safety remain important concerns. This review summarizes the fundamental principles, major medical applications, benefits, limitations, and future prospects of nanotechnology in medicine. Overall, nanotechnology has considerable potential to improve healthcare, although further research and clinical validation are necessary to ensure its safe, effective, and widespread application.
